Yunomi.life offers the world’s largest selection of artisanal Japanese tea by introducing you to over 160 farms, factories and specialists of tea and accessories to enjoy a life steeped in tea.
Yunomi Tea Merchant, Ian Chun, founded Matcha Latte Media KK in2012 to revitalize declining industries producing traditional Japanese goods (such as tea) through global e-commerce. In 2013, we launched Yunomi.life as an online store distributing products from small-scale, family-operated tea farms and factories. Today, we have grown to over 160 producers offering a thousand teas and shipping to over 75 countries.
The Japanese tea industry once had 202,673 tea farms in the 1980s; in 2015, there were only 20,144. Like many industries, the modernization, Westernization, urbanization and aging of Japan means the industry is slowly fading away (and this continues to be true despite the recent matcha boom of the past decade). We believe, that further globalization of Japanese tea, from 2% in the 2000s to 5% in 2020, to 25% as production decreases, is necessary to ensure that there is a large enough community of artisanal producers to sustain the industry (industrialization and corporate agriculture will help ensure mass market product continues to be available).
We hope to become a true platform that facilitates the distribution of the highest quality Japanese tea, gourmet food & traditional crafts. This requires not only a sales platform (a robust online store), but a multi-user platform that also encompasses production, regulatory compliance, and global logistics in addition to an efficient sales and customer service system. Overcoming the many logistics, regulatory and of course language barriers that separate Japan from the global market would allow artisanal farms and producers to greatly expand their market, and supplement the loss of revenue as the domestic market shrinks.
What’s popular at YUNOMI.LIFE?
Kaneroku Matsumoto – Wasencha Midori Sencha -Green Tea
3rd generation tea farmer Hiroki Matsumoto manages some 30 fields in the Kiriyama region of the Makinohara plain in Shimada, Shizuoka. He utilizes the UNESCO designated World Heritage agricultural tradition, Chagusaba, to cultivate his tea leaves. This tradition requires farmers to cultivate sasa grasses surrounding the tea fields, and use the grasses as fertilizer in the fields.
Regular steamed tea leaves create a balanced sencha green tea.
Ogura Tea Garden – Yabukita Wakocha – Black Tea
This wakocha, or Japanese black tea, utilizes Yabukita cultivar tea plants, and is grown without the use of pesticides. From the first flush in late spring, farmer Yuki Ogura produces this black tea in the style of first flush Darjeeling tea, withered, rolled, then lightly oxidized.
Oguri Tea – Makinohara Sencha– Green Tea
The traditional flavor of sakura Japanese cherry blossoms paired with sencha green tea from Makinohara, Shizuoka.
